I’m not qualified and I have been out of paid employment for too long

A lot of job ads are written for the ‘perfect’ applicant. Solid candidates will get interviews too! Go back and look at your skills and strengths and identify your transferable skills. You will see you have  a lot to offer.

I don’t even know if I should send the application off as I am not sure if it is really a job I want.

If you are at the job search stage, you have done a lot of work already on what you are looking for. If the job ad does not spell out your ‘dream job’ you should still apply. Perhaps everything was not written in the job ad, or conveyed in the right way. That is what the interview is for. To find out more. Applying for a role does not mean you have to accept it if you are offered.

I have sent so many applications in and I am hearing nothing!

Take a step back and be honest with yourself. Are you applying for roles in line with your skills, strengths and experience? Is your resume and cover letter aligned to the role? Along with sending through your resume and cover letter, what else are you doing? There are so many more strategies you could be using! Are you connecting with hiring managers and following up? Networking? You have to be proactive in your search.

I’m terrible at selling myself

Job searching and applying for roles is about marketing yourself to potential employers. Unfortunately, there is now way around this and many of us do not like self-promotion. Instead of looking at it this way, look at it that you trying to tell your story to someone. You want to tell them everything you have done that makes you the person you are today which is ultimately the best person for that role and company.
